Bonjour, 1957 Paris! Funny Face follows Quality magazine in New York City and its direct, dramatic Editor-in-Chief, Ms. Maggie Prescott. Audrey Hepburn’s character undergoes a whirlwind makeover and is whisked away to Paris. She wears clothes designed by Givenchy and chases the life of an intellectual. The film is full of silk, songs, and the most savory city.
Funny Face is one of my all-time faves, and agree with the rec for Two for the Road (absolutely underrated!!!). Will throw a vote in there for Love in the Afternoon, lesser-known and a little problématique, one might say; but released in the same year (1957), filmed on location in Paris, and is a fun watch.
I NEED to watch Love in the Afternoon! I have no excuse for not having seen it yet because Ray Eames designed the title sequence for that movie!! I'm the Eames Office's Archivist, so it's an insanely personal overlap!
Literally came here to say the same. Like, Sabrina and Breakfast at Tiffany's show up on all the lists but Two for the Road is supremely underrated. Also Charade is just heckin' fun.
As a musical skeptic, Aubrey's 'Funny Face' and 'An American in Paris' along with Jacques Demy's work blew my mind when I first watched them. The colours! The sets! The clothes! The layers of artistry! The ridiculous rom-com plots!
I am also a musical skeptic! But then a movie like this comes along (and Mamma Mia—I'm a die-hard ABBA fan) and my mind is quickly changed! Glad I'm not alone. :)
Ooh, I need to see An American in Paris now. Thanks for the rec!
I was OBSESSED with Funny Face and everything Audrey as a kid — I somehow convinced my teacher to let me read her (very grown-up) biography and do a report on it. Thank you for the dose of inspiration as always!
I can totally envision little-you loving this movie and Audrey!! I think if I were to have been exposed to her as a kid, I would have done that report too! ❤️
Recently showed it to my teen and now the quote “take the picture, take the picture” in approximations of Audrey’s adorable voice as she descends the steps of the Louvre for the photo shoot is in our family phrases rotation! Speaking of photos, I do hope you’ll share some from your upcoming wedding which sounds lovely. It’s been fun to follow along on the inspiration and I’m curious to see the necklace you mentioned. 😊
I am hearing her voice in my head now! I love that it's become a phrase you shout at each other!
YES! I worry that I'm annoying everyone on Substack by mentioning the wedding so often. I'll definitely write about it after. :) Thanks for caring and for reading!
I love this movie so much that I also wrote a post about it on my blog in 2013! 😂 I watched it again a couple of weeks ago after I returned from France. Full of amazing visual inspiration!
oh to be in the pre-easyjet era of Orly
I can't imagine!!
