Thank you for taking the time to read it! I love your newsletter and definitely need to search through it for Venice recommendations. Thanks for the sweetness and for your writing!!
Okay NOW I've finished. Gertrude Stein - enough said honestly. I do agree with you that her portrayal in Midnight in Paris was great. It's also the only time I've liked Dali (but I think it's more that I really really like the actor). I always call that film the ultimate art nerd film.
And I love that you shared your inspiration came from Jeanne Damas and her apartment. I've been a long time fan of her, and I'm always curious as to what books she'd have in her house. I suppose we're similar in that as soon as I'm in someone's house I go straight for their books (or I get the impression we're similar there haha). I'd imagine Jeanne would have a whole lot of French books. Bonjour Tristesse, maybe the recent release My Husband, the like.
Thank you for sharing this! What a lovely read. I feel like I can peel even more layers and go down more rabbit holes. What a blast :)
First, I loooooved that you wrote a comment while reading and another one after! And I am so happy to see how connected you felt with all of my writing in this post. I agree that we do seem very similar in many ways!
You're so right about Peggy and the Vogels being extreme opposites, yet they are somehow equally as admirable. I adore that Peggy seemed totally secure in herself and allowed herself the most vibrant life (surely money helped!). I am working through her autobiography and loving even her description of her early years. Though, I'm impatiently waiting for her era when she steps into her Venetian palace!!
It's wonderful that you're starting your own art collection akin to the Vogels! I wish it were still within reach to collect the modernists, but our contemporaries are important too. :)
Adrien Brody as Dali was the best example of casting maybe ever!!!
If you ever catch a real glimpse at the book titles on Jeanne Damas's shelf, let me know! I just finished reading Bonjour Tristesse and adored it. I'll be on a Françoise Sagan-themed vintage car roadtrip next weekend through her hometown and will be imagining her in certain spots. Can't wait!
Thank you again for all of your meaningful comments!!!
Okay I'm still reading this (and LOVING it) but I HAD to talk about Peggy and the Vogels. They're like polar opposites, actually. I just really want to read Peggy's tell all memoir (especially her beef with Max Ernst and Dorothea Tanning) AND a biography on her. She seems so messy is the most delightful way!
And the Vogels! I mean how can they not be inspirational? I frequent art markets in my area and frequently buy from local artists and put them everywhere because I think of the Vogels all the time. I've chatted with so many local artists and met lovely people as a result (and got great art). They're a a continual inspiration! What a stellar couple they were!
Loved this! Definitely want to visit Venice and the Peggy Guggenheim Museum someday. Have always loved that Calder headboard! It’s so hard to choose a famous painting, but for me it would probably be one of Richard Diebenkorn’s paintings from his Berkeley series.
Ooooh, great choice! When I lived in the Bay Area in 2013, I remember the De Young exhibition about Diebenkorn's Berkeley years. That was my introduction to him--a totally ideal one!
The Calder headboard is forever in my daydreams!!!
I had to come back to your great comment because I started following @collectorwalls thanks to you! He just posted yesterday about Peggy Guggenheim's Venice home and all of the art on her walls, including most of the photos I shared here. The internet is a small world!!!
Also, it made me realize that I forgot to respond to you! Thank you for the rec to follow his account. Seems like he and I are cut from the same cloth. :)
I loved this! I would love to wake up to a Rothko every morning.
I have loads of Venice information in my newsletter. Have a wonderful trip!

The Peggy Guggenheim museum in Venice is one of my favourites 🥰
I can’t wait to see it next month!!

Wonderful! Loved reading this, and learning more about Peggy! What a character and now I need to book a trip to Venice!
Get on that plane, please (easier said than done)!!!!
I love the Collector fictional apartment - I'd be so happy there! Although it wouldn't fit in my apartment, I'd love to live with Joan Mitchell's La Grande Vallée XIV (For a Little While): https://www.joanmitchellfoundation.org/joan-mitchell/artwork/0996-la-grande-vall%C3%A9e-xiv-for-a-little-while
I will settle to visit it one day at the Centre Pompidou!
Sounds like you'll totally need a worth-it apartment upgrade. It would be unreal to have that Mitchell painting in your home!!
The Centre Pompidou is one of my favorites, so I hope you can visit it soon too. :)
Loved reading this, thank you for sharing!
Thank you for taking the time to read it too!!
